Western medicine (conventional medicine) is the mainstream of the healthcare system in Hong Kong. Over 70% Hong Kong citizens have out-patient clinic accounts at the public hospitals of Hospital Authority. However, traditional Chinese medicine is not unpopular since 70’s decade. The share is increasingly significant.
Western medicine focuses on body parts and considers internal organs as discrete entities, yet traditional Chinese medicine attributes the entire body, emotion and spirit as one whole unit. However, Western medicine has more advanced development because of extensive evidence-based research. It turns belief into evidence which provokes the change in clinical practice. Traditional Chinese medicine has prudent effects as it has more than 4000-year history and the usage never ceases. Nevertheless, it still cannot be considered as the mainstream of healthcare despite the strong efficacy.
The integrative medical platform is the best place for ideas and experience exchange between the western medical and traditional Chinese medical professionals. Either system has it’s own advantages but it’s not easy to open the conversation between the systems. IJOP can help to initiate, promote, motivate and enhance the communication and the evidence from both systems that can be complementary to each other. Though it is a start-up, every success starts from the small step.
